Abstract

1277059 Lubricating hulls GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 30 June 1969 [30 July 1968] 32972/69 Heading B7M Apparatus for reducing the drag on a vehicle, for example a submarine, moving through water includes a mixer 2 in which a liquid, preferably ambient water, is mixed with a water-soluble high molecular weight linear visco-elastic polymer. The resulting solution is passed via a conduit 3 to an annular duct 4 in the bow of the vehicle and thence is injected into the boundary layer through a porous or perforated plate 6. Downstream are located annular ducts 10 connected via manifold 12 to a pump 14, which sucks in the boundary layer through porous plates 11. This serves to stabilize the boundary layer by restricting its thickness, to achieve maximum effectiveness of the additive, which is most effective under conditions of high shear stress, and to achieve most efficient use of the additive, as the withdrawn solution is passed from the pump 14 to the mixer 2 for enriching and re-cycling. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,119,153.
