Abstract

1,245,098. Reducing surface friction. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 31 Aug., 1968, No. 41734/68. Heading F2R. [Also in Division B1] A method of reducing the drag of liquid on a surface comprises preparing a suspension of a polymeric drag reducing additive in a liquid, adding the suspension to an appropriate liquid to dissolve a substantial portion of the additive, and injecting the resulting solution into the layer of liquid adjacent to the surface. As shown, the suspension may be prepared in tank 8 and added to liquid flowing through chamber 7, the mixture being passed through tank 16 provided with a perforated structure 17 designed to assist mixing prior to injection through slot 21 into the boundary layer of liquid in pipe 2. The mixture leaving tank 16 may be diluted by liquid supplied through by-pass 22. Injected additive may be recovered downstream and reused. The method may be used to reduce surface friction in pipelines e.g. aircraft fuel supply lines and the drag of liquid on the sides of vessel.
