Broaching; rifling. - Guns and smallarms are smooth-finished or rifled by drawing through them a cutter-head consisting of a number of disks which have teeth, in the case of rifling, corresponding to the number of grooves required. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement for rifling in which the cutter-head 12 is rotated by a grooved cylinder 7 mounted on the spindle carrying the cutter-head and coacting with a fixed projection 6. To clear away the cuttings, oil is supplied freely by a pipe 10 secured to a disk closing the bore of the gun. The spindle is coupled, so as to be free to rotate, to a rod moved longitudinally by a device 3 which may be mechanically, hydraulically, or electrically operated.
