Abstract

1276776 Pyridine carboxylic acids LONZA Ltd 22 Sept 1970 [24 Sept 1969] 45147/70 Heading C2C A pyridine-carboxylic acid is prepared by oxidizing an alkyl-pyridine and/or a heterocyclic compound which carries a pyridine nucleus and which is substituted in at least one position by a group which is oxidizable under the reaction conditions to a carboxylic acid radical, comprising passing at least one said alkyl-pyridine or heterocyclic compound with an excess of nitric acid through an inert flow tube at a temperature of 180-370‹ C. and pressure of 20-500 atmospheres, the reaction temperature being attained and maintained by generating the thermal energy required directly in the wall of the flow tube and discharging the product from the flow tube. An electric current may suitably be passed through the material of the flow tube e.g. by making it the secondary winding of a transformer and the part of the flow tube which forms the reaction path is short-circuited. Advantageously, the pressure and temperature of the reaction product are partially reduced, prior to its discharge from the flow tube, by a baffle system connected before a discharge valve in the flow path. An example describes the preparation of nicotinic acid and the process may be used to prepare picolinic, and cinchomeric acids.
