1,132,746. Nicotinic and isonicotinic acids. RUTGERSWERKE UND TEERVERWERTUNG A.G. 3 June, 1966 [25 June, 1965], No. 24831/66. Heading C2C. In a process for preparing nicotinic acid or isonicotinic acid by oxidation of a substituted pyridine selected from 3-alkyl pyridine, 4- alkyl pyridine and mixtures of pyridine bases containing them, the substituted pyridine to be oxidized is dissolved in the proportion of 1 : 1 to 1: 10 by weight in an inert organic solvent which remains chemically unchanged under the conditions of the process, and the resulting solution is heated in the presence of selenium dioxide as catalyst to 130-200‹ C. with introduction of NO 2 into the solution.
