Abstract
1276701 Drying by electrical heaters W C MILLIGAN 22 May 1969 [22 May 1968] 26314/69 Heading F4G [Also in Division H5] A radiant heater 10 for drying paint, softening plastics for vacuum forming, and other uses, comprises a ridged metal plate 16<SP>1</SP> with a plurality of resistance heating elements disposed, preferably between the peaks of the ridges, to heat the plate 16<SP>1</SP> by convection and radiation to a temperature at which it radiates infra-red radiation very efficiently. A perforated metal screen 21 provides back pressure on the hot air heated by the elements 17 and reradiates infra-red radiation back towards the elements. The heater 10 has flared reflector walls 11. Plate 16<SP>1</SP> is of stainless steel which quickly oxidizes and darkens with use, thus increasing its absorption and emission efficiency. Flanged edges of plate 16<SP>1</SP> and screen 17 are mounted in ceramic wool insulation to allow for expansion and contraction. Heat insulating material 14 is provided beneath plate 16<SP>1</SP>. A double arrangement of ridged metal plates is described, Fig. 4 (not shown), sheathed elements. The heater 10 has flared reflector walls 11.
