1276581 Envelope or document carrier F C BREMER 29 April 1970 [29 April 1969] 20666/70 Heading B6A An envelope or document carrier, particularly for use in passing a mutilated document such as a mutilated cheque through a documentprocessing apparatus such as a reader-sorter machine, comprises front and rear walls 12, 13 overlying one another and adhesively joined along one of the longer sides and along at least one of the shorter sides to form a receptacle for the document, at least one of the walls projecting beyond the bottom 22 of the receptacle to form an extension 25, the adhesive join being such that an air vent or air vents 18, 19 to the receptacle are formed to prevent air being trapped in the receptacle causing bulging of the receptacle which might affect its passage through the apparatus. The data A, B, C on the cheque is copied in magnetic ink on the extension 25 for reading out by the apparatus. The carrier, Fig. 2, is formed from a blank of transparent material shown in Fig. 1. A strip 15 of adhesive extends across the blank, and two strips 16, 17 of adhesive, which terminate short of the strip 15 to provide the vents 18, 19, are provided on the edges of the wall 13. The blank is folded about the line 14 and the wall 12 is adhered to the wall 13 by the adhesive strips 15 ... 17. The adhesive used for the strip 15 includes titanium oxide and a blue or other dark dye so as to render the extension 25 relatively opaque as is necessary for the machine reading of the characters thereon. The width of the wall 12 is less than that of the wall 13 so that a part 20 of the latter projects to facilitate insertion of a document. In a modification (Fig. 5) the adhesive strips 16, 17, extend to the strip 15, and parts are cut away at 18, 19 to provide the vents. The adhesive strip 16 may be omitted (Fig. 3), in which case the walls 12, 13 may be joined by adhesive at the long edge opposite to the strip 15 (Fig. 4).
