Abstract

1276365 Lightning arresters GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 5 June 1969 [11 July 1968] 28394/69 Heading H2H A lightning arrester includes an arrangement whereby heat generated within the arrester is rapidly conducted to the exterior of the arrester housing. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the arrester includes four non-linear resistors 13-16 connected across a spark-gap stack. Leakage current through these resistors causes them to generate heat. The resistors are connected in series through coil springs 20-22 which also urge them outwards, improving their contact with the housing 2. A layer 34 of a material such as epoxy may also be used to improve further the thermal contact between the resistors 13- 16 and the housing, enabling heat to be conducted more rapidly to the exterior of the arrester. In a modification, the arrester may be filled with a gas such as helium which conducts heat better than does air. In further embodiments, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), an arrester of the type shown in Fig. 2 further includes a system of pipes through which a coolant fluid moves by either natural or forced convection. A controlling thermostat and external heat exchanger may also be provided. The cooling systems for a number of arresters may be combined in a single fluid circulation arrangement (Fig. 5).
