Abstract
887,383. Transformers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 18, 1958 [June 18, 1957], No. 19127/57. Class 38 (2). [Also in Group XIII] To improve heat transfer across a solid/liquid boundary, e.g. in an oil-filled transformer, baffles 16 are provided in the liquid to disperse thermal layers at the boundary. The baffles are progressively shorter in the direction of liquid flow and may either be horizontal or inclined. They are preferably of heat-insulating material, e.g. of paper or laminated plastic, and may be hollow to trap liquid between their faces. In a transformer they may be attached to the core and/or the windings, or to the tank wall, or to both as shown. Alternatively, the baffles may be mounted on a separate structure (Fig. 7, not shown), when they may be resilient or have resilient edges to ensure contact with the windings or tank. The tank may have external cooling tubes.
