1276188 Hydrostatic release mechanism R W WINTER 12 June 1970 [8 July 1969] 34403/69 Heading B7S [Also in Division F2] A hydrostatic release mechanism for use on ships to automatically release life-saving apparatus if the ship sinks, comprises a chamber 12, a passage 18 through the wall of the chamber being closed at one end by a porous plug 20 and at the other end with a disc valve 24 arranged so that air may pass in either direction under relatively small pressure gradients but on sudden external pressure (e.g. by water acting on the valve when the ship sinks) the valve closes and seals the chamber. The external pressure is applied to the top of a diaphragm 16, which on moving down under pressure releases the life-saving apparatus. Specification 883,044 is referred to.
