Abstract

1275958 Tailstocks SUSSEX TOOL CO Ltd 11 Dec 1970 [13 Dec 1969] 60907/69 Heading B3T A tailstock for a lathe comprises a body portion 1 with a bore 2 in which is slidably movable a quill 3 which may carry a tool and having a rack which is engaged by a pinion 4 for displacement in the bore 2. The rear end of the quill 3 has a portion 3A with a threaded bore 7 which engages a feed screw 8 which extends through a mounting member 9 secured to the body 1. A rotatable member 11A for operating the feed screw 8 is engaged with the mounting member 9. To effect normal rotation of the feed by way of member 11A and handle 16, the extending end of the feed screw is provided with a serrated flat portion 8A which is engageable by a jaw member 12 actuated by an internal cam ring member 13 which is rotatable coaxially with the feed screw axis by handles 15. The relative rotation of the cam ring 13 in either direction respectively clamps or releases the jaw 12 against the serrated part of the feed screw. The provision of both rack and screw feed for the quill permits rapid displacement and fine adjustment of the tool position and of the quill in relation to the tailstock.
