Abstract

1275936 Liquid jet recorder C H HERTZ 23 Sept 1969 [8 Oct 1968 2 April 1969] 46867/ 69 Heading B2F [Also in Divisions B6 and H4] In an electrostatic jet recorder a fine jet 1 of electrically conductive tracing liquid 5 which is connected to an output from a source of variable voltage signals, is expelled from a nozzle 2, where it is maintained under pressure, through an orifice 4 towards a recorder 3, the jet passing through a tubular electrode 8, the axis of which lies along the axis of the jet, which is permeable to liquid and electrically conductive during operation of the recorder. The tube 8 may be formed from a wire coil or porous conductive material or it may be formed from an electrical insulator with a permeable conductive layer on its inner surface, the tube may also be provided with a suction jacket 9 which has a permeable end wall 9a. The recording means may be electrically charged in opposition to the charge on the droplets, the charging means comprising either corona discharge means 16 or direct contact means 18. Droplet formation in the jet may be controlled by an electrical/mechanical oscillator driven by an A.C. device which is itself controlled. The source of variable voltage signals may be adapted to control the voltage difference between the tracing liquid and control electrode between 100V and 1000V. Means may be provided for holding the air in the vicinity of the jet at a reduced pressure. Stray spray is prevented from reaching the recorder by electrodes placed between the control electrode 8 and the recording means 3 which deflect the spray away from the recording means. Several nozzles together with their own control electrodes may be arranged together in front of one recording device.
