Abstract

1275931 Lightning arresters GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 9 Sept 1969 [16 Sept 1968] 44428/69 Heading H2H A flip-flop lightning arrester comprises at least two parallel-connected columns each including a magnetic are blow-out coil. The coil in one column is shunted by a spark-gap, and the coil in another column is shunted by a valve resistor. In the construction shown, the parallel columns A, B each include four current-limiting gaps 4 1 , 4 2 , 4 3 , 4 4 and 4<SP>1</SP> 1 , 4<SP>1</SP> 2 , 4<SP>1</SP> 3 , 4<SP>1</SP> 4 in series with blow-out coils 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, respectively. In order to prevent continued parallel operation of the columns when both have sparked over simultaneously, it is arranged that the column B builds up counter voltage much more rapidly than column A and seals off in a few hundred microseconds. This occurs since current increases quickly in the coil 5<SP>1</SP> which has low inductance and resistance. In column A, since the gap 6 is sparked over, the voltage across the coil 5 is very small, and consequently the arcs in the main gaps of the column are only extended slowly. The arrester may have additional parallel columns each constructed in the same way as either column A or column B.
