Abstract
1275820 Rolling tubes INNOCENTI SOC GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA METALLURGICA E MECCANICA 29 Dec 1969 [8 Jan 1969] 63110/69 Heading B3M A feed device for a pilger rolling mill includes a pneumatic piston 1 coupled to a support 5 for a tube blank 6, the blank 6 being fed to the right by the rolls of the mill and being returned to the left by the piston. A head 1a of the piston slides in a cylinder 9, and is arranged to compress 7 air in the cylinder at a variable rate. As the piston moves to the right, air in the cylinder passes, through vents in a hollow air tube 7 in the cylinder, to a port 12, until the piston covers the vents. At this stage the air remaining in the cylinder is compressed and acts as a buffer both to stop movement of the piston and to accelerate it in the opposite direction. Air supplied to the port 12 passes through the vents to maintain the acceleration. The characteristics of the device can be varied by adjusting the axial positions of the tube 7 and of an end stop 8 for the cylinder. An hydraulic brake 13 is provided, and a bush 3 for rotating a helically grooved port 2 of piston 1 as it reciprocates.
