Abstract

1275556 Labelling machine ADONET Ltd 18 July 1969 [7 Sept 1968] 42681/68 Heading B8F Labelling apparatus comprises means for feeding a backing sheet carrying self-adhesive labels, at a preselected speed around an edge member, rod or roller such that the labels are peeled off for application to an article. A backing sheet 41 with associated labels passes from a supply roller 13 around guide rollers 16, 171 to a labelling station 19 where the labels are detached by passage of the backing sheet around a rod 21, and are applied to a passing article 23 by a spring-biased pressing member 25 which is mounted on a pivotable assembly 18. The backing sheet 14 passes round a guide roller 39 to a take-up reel 32. A D.C. motor continuously drives the take-up reel 32 via a slipping clutch, and also a knurled wheel 34 that feeds the backing sheet 14 when they are brought into contact by a pivoting of a member 37 on energization of an electromagnet 43. On deenergization of electromagnet 43, the backing 14 is clamped between member 37 and a bracket 36. A reflected light scanning head (51) (see Fig. 2, not reproduced) is mounted upstream of the label stripping roller 21 (Fig. 1). Arrival of an article 23 under the labelling head 24 activates a switch (S1 (Fig. 2) and bi-stable (49) so energizing the electromagnet 43 (Fig. 1), pivoting member 37, and initiating feeding of the backing sheet 14. The scanning head (51) (Fig. 2) detects the next label to feed under it, and then switches over the bi-stable (49), so de-energizing the electromagnet and hence clamping the backing sheet (14). A silicon controlled rectifier circuit is described in the Specification for varying the speed of the D.C. motor (see Fig. 3, not reproduced).
