Abstract

127,521. Thomson, E. A. Jan. 8, 1919. Packing, non-metallic; boxes; followers and bushes; connected to source of low pressure.-A packing applicable for the piston-rods of engines, pumps, and compressors for ammonia or other gases consists of cup-leathers D of asbestos, rubber, or rubber or leather substitute, &c., which are expanded by inner rings E of similar material and white-metal rings F'. The latter rings have projections F which bear on the rings E, are hollowed to receive the rings D, and have bevelled shoulders bearing on the tapered lips of the rings D. A cast-iron lantern ring H formed at its ends like the rings F' forms a space which is connected to the low-pressure sides of the compressor. The ring H and the neck bush B are lined with white metal. The box is closed by a rubber or similar ring K and a gland M fitted with oil-retaining packing N.
