Abstract
1275005 Refining mineral oils GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 29 Aug 1970 41689/70 Heading C5E White oil is produced by catalytic hydrogenating a lubricating oil stock containing 5-30 volume per cent of aromatics, and treating the hydrotreated material, containing less than 4 volume per cent of aromatics, by a single contacting with sulphuric acid and recovering white oil from the acid contacted material. The hydrogenation is carried out at 316-399‹ C., 175-210 kg. per cm. 2 , a liquid hourly space velocity of 0À5-3 and a hydrogen feed rate of 35À6-178 standard cubic metres of hydrogen per 100 litres of oil stock to hydrogenate aromatics whilst avoiding substantial cracking using a catalyst comprising a hydrogenating component selected from nickel and tungsten and their oxides and sulphides on a carrier having a "Cat A" activity index of less than 25. A suitable catalyst carrier is alumina containing 2 wt per cent fluorine; the fluorine can be added to the hydrogenation operation. The feed stock can be solvent extracted and dewaxed before the hydrogenation. A feed 10 is hydrogenated at 12 and the effluent is stripped with steam at 24 and contacted with 0À01-0À1 volumes of fuming sulphuric acid or oleum at 32 at 27-121‹ C. The treated material 30 is neutralized at 40 with caustic soda, extracted with an isopropyl alcohol-water mixture at 48 to remove sulphonates, vacuum stripped with nitrogen at 62 and contacted with clay at 70.
