[Also in Division C5] The novel diesters of formula in which each of R 1 and R 5 is an aliphatic saturated straight-chain monovalent C 4-13 hydrocarbon radical and each of R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 is an aliphatic saturated straight-chain monovalent C 1-4 hydrocarbon radical are prepared by reacting 2,2,7,7-tetramethyl-octane- 1,8-diol with at least one C 8-23 α,α<SP>1</SP>-dialkylated monocarboxylic aliphatic saturated straightchain acid or acid chloride, or alternatively by a transesterification process. Examples describe the preparation of esters using various acids, e.g. 2,2-dimethyldodecanoic acid. The esters may be used as lubricants or bases for lubricants.
