Abstract

1,153,161. Lubricants. NIPPON OIL CO. Ltd. 2 Aug., 1968, No. 8235/66. Heading C5F. A lubricant comprises a mineral lubricating oil and a minor amount of an organic phosphorus compound obtained from the hydrolysis of a compound of formula where R 1 is a C 1 O + alkyl or alkenyl group, and R 2 and R 3 are each hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkanyl groups but R 2 and R 3 are not both hydrogen, the hydrolysis being performed in the presence of water, dilute hydrochloric acid or dilute acetic acid and the organic phosphorus compound being separated from the aqueous layer after settling. The lubricant may also contain a succinimide of formula where R<SP>1</SP> is a C 30 -C 200 hydrocarbon group and Z is a monoalkylenediamine or polyalkylenepolyamine group, a copolymer of an α-alkyl acrylic acid ester with an acrylic acid ester of an alkyl tertiary amino alkanol or a hydrolysis product of a copolymer of vinyl acetate with an α-olefinic hydrocarbon.
