Novel compounds of formula (wherein Hal is halogen and X is H, alkyl, benzyl or diphenylmethyl) are prepared from compounds of formula (wherein X<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, benzyl or diphenylmethyl) by reaction with a halogenating agent in an anhydrous solvent, whereafter, when X<SP>1</SP> is benzyl or diphenylmethyl, the product may be hydrogenolysed to obtain a product wherein X<SP>1</SP> is H. The halogenation reaction may be accompanied by some formylation in which case the product is deformylated by dissolving it in hot methanol and adding a little sodium. Compounds of Formula II are prepared by hydrolysis of the tetraacetates thereof.
