A plurality of parallel packaging machines A, B are fed with chocolates, sweets from a cooling belt 10 by strippers 9, 11, 12, 13 which can pivot out of operation about pivots 14 when there is an accumulation of sweets against the strippers to allow the relevant articles to travel on downstream. Each stripper covers a greater belt width than the preceding one and is arranged to feed either equal quantities (Fig. 1) or, decreasing quantities, Fig. 2, to the machines. As shown, four rows of sweets are laterally deflected by stripper 9 to an off-take conveyer 7 and passed via conveyers 5, 3, 2 to an intermittently rotating machine disc 1 which also receives sweets deflected by stripper 11 and passed via conveyers 8, 6, 4 and 2. Since it is arranged that the input to conveyer 7 is greater than its output, sweets accumulate upstream of stripper 9 which subsequently pivots to allow the sweets to pass downstream to stripper 11. Stripper 11, normally deflecting three rows of sweets, thus temporarily deflects seven rows of sweets into conveyer 8 which upon filling results in stripper 11 pivoting out to allow seven rows of sweets to travel to stripper 12 feeding machine B. The manner of operation is repeated for machine B although stripper 13 is not normally required to pivot since the output of sweets from the belt 10 is equal to or less than the total output of the machines. Upon the occurrence of an inadequate supply of sweets the above arrangement of strippers 9, 11, 12, 13 results in a sequential shut-down of the machines, i.e. machine B shuts-down first. Each stripper may be actuated to pivot-in again after a predetermined time or upon a predetermined emptying of the appropriate off-take conveyer 7, 8. The strippers which may be arranged on both sides of the belt (Fig. 1) are retained in the discharge position by adjustable springs (15, 16, Fig. 1), counterweights, or servo-motors. Conveyers 5-8 are designed as shaker tables and the four parallel conveyers 3, 4 have separate drives.
