Abstract

1,274,683. Germicidal articles. SUTURES Inc. 12 June, 1969 [17 June, 1968], No. 29905/69. Heading A5E. An article having long-lasting germicidal properties and comprising at least partly a nitrogenous amphoteric, organic, film- or fibreforming material with germicidal ions bonded chemically to said material is obtained by contacting said article with an aqueous solution of an ionic germicidal salt (other than a surface active agent or cationically active antibiotic) to provide intimate association of germicidal ion and article, and then at least partly removing the aqueous solvent. Particular articles specified are films, fibres, threads, yarns, fabrics and textiles, e.g. as sutures, dressings or bandages, and the material thereof may be collagen, silk (which may be degummed), fibroin, or polyvinyl pyrrolidone. Germicidal salts disclosed are benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, lauryl and cetyl dimethylbenzylammonium chlorides, lauryl pyridinium halides, hexachlorophene and salts of organic acids, in particular of acid antibiotics such as penicillins and fumagillin. Optionally the article may be provided with both cationic and anionic germicidal ions, or anticoagulant properties may be introduced into the article by means of heparin ions.
