Sirens.-Sirens or " diaphones " of the kind described in Specifications 25268/05 are provided with a steam packing between the sounding-portion of the piston and cylinder, whereby leakage from the compression or cushioning space is avoided. In the construction shown, the sounding-slits in the piston h are arranged at a greater distance than usual from the driving-portion g, and a series of shallow grooves e, e<1> are formed in the piston in proximity to a slit or slits b communicating with the steam chamber c.
