Abstract

1,274,534. Monitoring the flow of granular material. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Aug.5, 1970 [Sept. 5, 1969], No. 44070/69. Heading G1A. A method or apparatus for monitoring the flow of granular material (e.g. coal) in a conduit 4 comprises a source 5 projecting light via a polarizer 7 through a transparent inspection portion 3 of the conduit 4 and a light detecting system 10 receiving and monitoring light reflected by the material flowing through the conduit. The detector, preferably a photo-voltaic cell, should receive a continuously variable pulsed signal. An alarm is activated if the signal becomes constant for more than a certain period, thereby warning of blockages. The light source may be a laser, a white light source or a high intensity mercury vapour lamp. The light is best projected at an angle of 67 degrees to the surface of the material that is at an angle at which little or no surface reflection takes place from inspection portion 3. In an alternative system an alarm is activated when the rate of flow of material decreases below a certain value.
