Abstract
1,090,777. Photo-electric smoke detectors. G.A. ROBERTS. July 8, 1965 [July 13, 1964], No.29043/65. Heading G1A. A smoke detector operates on the principle that light scattered from the smoke particles increases the illumination of a photo-cell, operating an alarm. The apparatus comprises a casing, containing the alarm circuit components, a lamp 44 (Fig. 1), located at one end of a light transmission conduit, containing a lens 64 and various aperture plates 56, 68, 70 and directing light into a light trap 92, and a photo-sensitive resistor detector 96. Various apertures for entry and exit of air are provided in the casing, the components and lamp being mounted so that normally a convection current of air flows through casing. Suitable light baffles are also provided. Normally little light is scattered towards the detector 96, mounted out of the direct light path, but when smoke is present, it is illuminated, causing a reduction in its resistance. The detector is arranged in a bridge circuit, two arms of which comprise the detector itself and a resistor 104, the other two capacitors 124, 126 of equal magnitude or a certain ratio. When the photo-resistor 96 decreases to the value of resistors 104 or a predetermined value proportional to it, the silicon controlled rectifier 122 is switched on, energizing a relay 128. This closes contact 128 and a buzzer 110 is energized. A temperature sensitive switch 112 is provided. An alternative circuit Fig. 5 (not shown) is arranged to switch off automatically when the smoke has dispersed, whereas in the case of the circuit of Fig. 1, this has to be done manually by breaking the supply current. An alternative casing construction is also described Fig.4 (not shown).
