A feed device for a hollow spindle lathe comprises a carriage 10 movable along a frame (not shown) at the end of the hollow spindle to pick up workpieces fed from a magazine to a cradle and feed them into the spindle. The carriage includes a rotatable work-engaging device comprising a power operable gripping means 20 that includes a collet 16 axially movable within an outer sleeve 19 to grip a workpiece supported by the cradle. The workpiece is drawn against an adjustable stop 17 fixed relative to the carriage. Pads 26 may be used to protect, e.g. threads on a workpiece. The collet is moved by a fluid pressure device 23. A rod 25 engages a stationary stop to eject a workpiece as the carriage is moved away from the spindle. The carriage may be moved by an endless chain.
