Abstract

1,274,441. Cycle steering and suspension; wheel hubs. J. DIFAZIO. 1 July, 1969 [2 July, 1968], No. 31518/68. Headings B7C and B7E. A motor cycle steering and suspension unit comprises a pivotal steering support mounted within the wheel hub, the support consisting of a spindle 23 with a rigidly attached king-pin 22 supported by bearings 21, 20 in an inner hub 11 which is located by bearings 13, 14 in an outer hub 12. The spindle 23 is supported in bushes 24, 25 at the ends of suspension arms 26, 27 and the inner hub is attached by brackets 33 to a steering fork 34 which is linked by universal joints 36, 38 and radius arms 37 (which act in a push-pull manner) to a steering column 40. The outer hub thus rotates with the wheel and the inner hub pivots for steering about the king- pin 22 carrying the outer hub and wheel with it, while the spindle 23 can pivot about its axis in its connection on the arms 26, 27 to permit a variation in the king-pin trailing angle. The radius arms 37 may be telescopically variable in length. Spokes 17 are secured to flanges 15, 16 inboard of brake discs 18, 19 on the outer hub.
