Abstract

1,273,878. Discharge lamps. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 27 April, 1970 [9 May, 1969], No. 20140/70. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G2] A discharge apparatus for an emission spectrograph comprises a cylindrical excitation chamber 1 into which there passes through at least one end wall 2, 4 a slidable column 7 supporting an electrode-clamp at its inner end, the column being engaged by a concentric ring 68 which is slidably mounted in a grooved recess in the end wall such that the column is movable in three perpendicular directions. The support column 7 comprises concentric tubular portions 7a and 7b where the inner portion 7b is rotatable by means of a link arm 52 (not shown) and half-clamps 34, 36 are respectively attached to the tubular portions 7a, 7b. The half-clamps each have a conducting electrode contact 38, 40, e.g. of graphite, one of which is provided with a notch 42 to locate the electrode. The tubes 7a and 7b and the half-clamps are pierced by ducts 64 (Fig. 5, not shown) for circulating a cooling- fluid. The column 7 is attached to a carriage block 72 vertically adjustable by the worm gear 74 carried by carriage 76 which itself is carried by carriage 84 such that the track of carriage 76 is perpendicular to the track of carriage 84. Ports are provided circumferentially around the chamber to serve as an optical exit to a spectrograph and to enable the electrodes to be aligned on the optical axis of the spectrograph by means of an image of the electrodes produced on a screen by a lamp and lens system. An opening 107 in the bottom of chamber 1 may be provided either for accommodating a cup 106 traversed by a nozzle 108 for admitting gas to the chamber or alternatively for introducing a third electrode holder. The chamber 1 has a detachable lining made of e.g. polythene filled with carbon black or P.T.F.E.
