[Also in Division F4] An optical system for observing the arc of a consumable electrode electric arc furnace having a plurality of crucibles and an electrode 49 which is movable over each of the crucibles, comprises two assemblies 120, positioned close to electrode 49, comprising mirrors 147, and a lens 140 mounted in tubes 144, 145 and 156, and a 45‹ prism 142 which reflects light 125 via a lens 122, a mirror assembly 121, and a lens 123 on to a viewing screen 124; tube 156 is rotatable about its vertical axis to enable the opening 148 of the assembly to be positioned close to the electrode; mirror assembly 121 Fig. 6 (not shown) comprises a three-side housing 200 having a pivoted back wall 206 supporting a mirror 207, and apertured side walls 202, 203, the angle between the sidewalls being equal to the angle of rotation of the electrode from the first to second crucible; when the electrode is above the first crucible the back walls 206 are open allowing light to pass straight through, and when it is above the second crucible the back walls are closed reflecting the light on to the screen 124, Fig.4 (not shown).
