Abstract

895,893. Periscopes. STRACHAN & HENSHAW Ltd. Nov. 5, 1959 [Aug. 8, 1958], No. 25574/58. Class 97(1). [Also in Group XL(a)] Apparatus for viewing an object in an enclosed space comprises parallel illuminating and viewing beam paths the axes of which are directed through a single aperture wherein a pair of reflecting surfaces is provided in one beam to bring said axes closer together. As shown in Figs. 4 and 3, a tubular casing 25 extends through shielding 13 to a recess 22 in the inner wall of a member 12 connecting a charge/discharge machine to a nuclear reactor (not shown). The recess 22 has a window 21 separating it from the main cavity containing a fuel element 11 under examination. The casing houses two periscopes 28, 29 periscope 28 directing light from lamp 36 in housing 35 via the lens 37 and prism 39 to prisms 30 and thence through the window 21 in the direction 31. Light reflected from the fuel element 11 returns along direction 33 and is directed by prism 32 along periscope 29 provided with an eyepiece 20. Alternatively, only one periscope tube may be used, the light path for the other periscopic system being provided by the space within the tubular casing not occupied by the radially displaced periscope tube. A television camera may replace the eyepiece 20.
