1,273,825. Welding by fusion. LA SOUDURE ELECTRIQUE AUTOGENE PROCEDES ARCOS S.A. 20 Oct., 1969 [21 Oct., 1968], No. 51303/69. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] A submerged arc welding flux contains iron powder and at least one of the complex oxides SiO 2 .MnO ; Al 2 O 3 .MnO ; SiO 2 .Al 2 O 3 .MnO, which have been prepared by firing a mixture of the corresponding simple oxides with carbon. The weight ratio of Fe to the oxides is 1 : 1 to 3 : 1 and the weight ratio of SiO 2 and/or Al 2 O 3 to MnO in the oxides is 2 : 1 to 1 : 2. Up to 30% of the MnO in the complex oxide may be replaced by CaO.MgO.Al 2 O 3 . The complex oxides are made by fusing a mixture of SiO 2 and/or Al 2 O 3 with CaF 2 , CaCO 3 and/or MgCO 3 , manganese ore and coke. The complex oxide crushed to - 30 mesh is mixed with the Fe and Fe alloys powders, agglomerated with an alkali metal silicate and baked at 400‹ C. The Fe content of the flux is transferred to the weld during welding.
