A compressed air brake system for a motor vehicle which is an improvement in or modification of the system of parent Specification comprises a normal brake circuit 103 for the front wheels, a normal brake circuit 102 for the rear wheels, and an emergency brake circuit 104 for the rear wheels, first, second and third reservoirs 5, 6, 213 for supplying the normal brake circuits for the rear and front wheels and the emergency circuit 102, 103, 104 respectively, a brake unit 101 including a master piston 46 arranged when displaced to a first position to open a first valve 34 through which air passes from the reservoir 5 to the circuit 102 and when displaced to a second position to open a second valve 35 through which air passes from the reservoir 6 to the circuit 103, a third valve 234 being provided to admit air from the third reservoir 213 to the emergency brake circuit 104 when the pressure difference between the output sides of the second and first valves exceeds a predetermined value indicative of a loss of pressure in the normal rear wheel circuit 102. As shown, the valve 234 is part of a differential compressed air relay in a head 232 which relay further comprises a piston 233 associated with a resilient diaphragm 227, a chamber 85 on one side of the diaphragm 227 being connected with circuit 102 and a chamber 228 on the other side being connected with circuit 103. Valve 35 is operable by the pressure of circuit 102 but is also operable mechanically by means of an intermediate piston 114 in the event of a loss in pressure in circuit 102. Further in this event the diaphragm 227, will be bowed to the left by the excess pressure of circuit 103 as in Fig. 4 (not shown) which pressure will enter a conduit 217 and move the piston 233 to the right to open valve 234 and allow air to pass from reservoir 213 to circuit 104 via inlet aperture 237, duct 226, and outlet aperture 216. The piston 233 has a tubular extension 244 through which air can escape from the circuit 104 to chamber 84 via discharge valves 242 and 230 as in Fig. 5 (not shown).
