Abstract
1,272,743. Detonating explosive charges. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 28 Jan., 1965 [3 Feb., 1964], No. 3722/65. Heading F3A. In a process for generating a predetermined and defined detonation front in an explosive by means of an electric conductor, the latter is formed with alternate portions of large and small cross-section and, for initiating the detonation, is charged with an electric current of such a strength as to only cause vaporization of the regions of small cross-section. By way of example, when a manganin wire of 0À15 mm. diameter arranged coaxially of a cylindrical explosive column of 40 mm. diameter and a length of 400 mm. is loaded with a current impulse of 550 watt-seconds and a potential of 10 kilovolts, the detonation reaches the surface of the explosive cylinder at various points with time differences of up to 30 seconds, but when a wire consisting of alternately succeeding manganin wire sections of 0À15 mm. diameter and a length of 20 mm. and copper wire sections of 1À4 mm. diameter and a length of 2À5 mm. is used, the same high voltage discharge results in time differences of only 0À5 to 2À0 seconds. In a further example, detonating caps are embedded in the explosive, being open towards a wire placed adjacent to and spaced from the open ends of the caps. The wire is formed with alternate portions of small cross-section and large cross-section.
