Abstract

[Also in Divisions B5, C3 and E1] A flexible closed cell expanded plastics sheet material is produced from a relatively rigid closed cell plastics material by subjecting the starting material to an elevated temperature for a predetermined time by total immersion in a heating fluid and then applying pressure to the heated materials (see Division B5). A preferred material is polystyrene. A decorative finish may be provided by using patterned or embossed rollers or platens, dyeing, staining, printing or painting. Alternatively the starting material may be coloured, decorated or configured. The product may be provided with a flexible coating layer, e.g. of synthetic resin or textile material adhered or bonded thereto or a layer of plasticized cementitious material, e.g. cement mortar, asbestos cement or gypsum plaster, applied by brushing, spraying, dipping or by means of a trowel, doctor blade or rollers. The cementitious layer may be externally grooved or decorated by the addition of stone or synethetic resin chips, metallic "glitter", granules or flocking and the product may have bevelled opposite edges. The product is particularly intended for use as a clothing, carpeting or building material where insulation, particularly against moisture, is required.
