Abstract
1,272,533. Thermal regenerators. RHEINSTAHL HENSCHEL A.G. 5 Feb., 1970 [8 Feb., 1969], No. 5594/70. Heading F4K. A regenerative heat exchanger, e.g. for preheating combustion air, comprises a plurality of interconnected upper and lower circumferentially spaced, radially extending columns 1 through which heat carrier material passes downwardly from a funnel shaped distribution container 33 to a collection container 41. The columns are bounded by gas permeable walls 3 and extend between concentric inner and outer cylinders 4 and 5. A conveyer 24 passing through shafts 25 transfers carrier material from container 41 back up to container 33. The carrier material is heated in the upper columns 1 by a counter current flue gas flow which enters at 21 and leaves at 22 to pass through side ducts 23 into a chimney 20. Air to be preheated (see arrows 14) flows down through the shafts 25 to enter the lower part of the exchanger at 27, is heated by counter current contact with the carrier material in the lower columns 1, and passes up through the inner cylinder 4 to leave at 15. A separator plate 32 prevents the preheated air from contacting the flue gas flow. Flow deflectors, which can be of helical form (9, Fig. 4, not shown) or be horizontal plates (11, Fig. 5, not shown), are provided in the spaces 8 between adjacent columns 1 to extend the flow path through the carrier material of both the flue gases and the air to be preheated. A washing plant 44 is provided for occasional cleaning of the recirculated carrier material.
