Abstract

1,272,256. Doctoring coated webs. AGFAGEVAERT A.G. 13 Oct., 1969, No. 50179/69. Heading D1L. In a coating of a web 1 by passage round a backing roll 2 partially immersed in coating liquid 3, the coated liquid is doctored by a device 4 having a straight tangential portion followed by an arcuate portion terminating before the web leaves the roll. The arcuate portion may be supported by a stretched element 8 in the form of an elastic film or fabric (as shown) or by a strip of foam rubber having fine and coarse adjustment screws (Fig. 5). The pressure applied by the supporting means may be 5 to 1,000 g/cm<SP>2</SP>. The straight portion may also be suitably supported, e.g. by a modified stretched elastic element in contact with the straight and arcuate portions (Fig. 6). A temporary coating liquid may be supplied to the reverse side of the web before passage round the backing roll to provide a cushion (Fig. 2). The device may be of a perfluorinated polymer and may be 100-200Á thick. The carved portion may be laterally stretched. The liquid may have a viscosity of 50-4,000 cp, may be coated at 10-50 m/min. and the coating may have a thickness of 30-3,000Á.
