Abstract

1,272,236. Self-crimpable composite polyamide fibres. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 12 Nov., 1969 [14 Nov., 1968], No. 55427/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Self-crimpable composite fibres or filaments are comprised of at least two continuous adherent, longitudinally extending, eccentrically positioned synthetic polyamide components of different composition and shrinkage characteristics, each component being comprised of at least 50 mole per cent of at least one type of recurring units of the formula wherein x is 1 or 2, the symbols R which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen atoms and/or methyl groups, Y is 8-14 and S indicates a saturated ring, at least 40% by weight of the diamino constituent of the recurring units of the above formula being of a trans-trans stereoisomeric configuration and at least one of the components being a copolymer. Preferably the fibres or filaments consist of two components, x is 1 and R is hydrogen. At least one of the two components may consist essentially of recurring units of Formula (I). In this case at least 5% by weight of the diamino constitutents of one of the components may differ in stereoisomeric configuration from the diamino constituent in the other component. The trans-trans diamino constituent isomer content in one of the components (where two components are present) may be at least 10% lower than in the other component. In two component filaments one of the components may be a copolymer comprised of 50 to 95, preferably 70 to 90, mole per cent of at least one type of recurring unit of Formula (I). The components of two-component fibres or filaments may have a difference in shrinkability of 4-65%. In two component fibres or filaments one of the components may comprise 30-70% by weight of the filament. The composite filaments may be formed by melt-spinning in the usual manner, converged into a yarn, drawn at a draw ratio of up to 3.0 while passing round a heating element maintained at 120‹ C. and passed through a pressured jet at 120‹ C. to separate the filaments and produce a randomly crimped yarn.
