Abstract

1,272,146. Manufacture of thiophenol. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. 24 July, 1969 [5 Aug., 1968; 11 June, 1969], No. 37238/69. Heading C2C. A process for making thiophenols comprises reacting aromatic sulphonic acid and elemental phosphorus in the presence of an iodine catalyst in a first reaction zone, transferring at least a portion of the product of the first reaction zone to a second zone, adding water to said reaction zone to adjust the composition of the aqueous phase to between 86 and 96% by wt. H 3 PO 4 , maintaining temperature between 90‹ and 170‹ C,, adding at least the stoichiometric requirement of phosphorus which is required to convert the diaryl disulphide to thiophenol and phosphoric acid, maintaining organic liquid in aqueous suspension during reaction in said second reaction zone, passing the product of the second reaction zone to a suitable phase separation zone, separating an organic phase comprising a thiophenol and an aqueous phase containing phosphoric acid.
