Abstract

A hydroxyapatite is produced by continuously contacting a stream of hydrated lime slurry with a stream of phosphoric acid at least about 60% by weight, in an approximately stoichiometric ratio of 10 Ca (OH) 2 at 6 H3 PO4 and at a temperature of about 80 to about 85 degrees C, at a controlled pH of the reaction mixture of between about 9.0 and about 11.0; this hydroxyapatite is calcined at a temperature of at least 1000 degrees C, resulting in synthetic bone ash. The latter can be used in the manufacture of bone porcelain (also called English porcelain or phosphate porcelain), a product which occupies a very important place in the ceramics industry.
