Abstract

1,271,712. Business machines; check sums. KOMBINAT ZENTRONIK VEB. 21 April, 1969, No. 20232/69. Heading G4A. A digital electric business machine is programmed for calculating a check sum based on a modulus wherein a number is transferred from an input store ER to an arithmetic unit ASW, a calculation is initiated in the unit ASW for calculating a check sum for the number and a correction which depends on the modulus on which the number is based, and the check sum is then stored in a location of the input store. The numbers may represent account, article or material numbers, and a 4-bit check sum is calculated by multiplying the number digits by different weighting factors (e.g. 2<SP>5</SP>, 2<SP>4</SP>, 2<SP>3</SP> &c.) and dividing the product sum by a suitable modulus, e.g. 9, 10, 11 in a known manner. The present machine is distinguished from the prior art in that the check sum is returned to a location in the input store ER. This location is usually occupied by sign bits or by the highest decimal place and means are provided for preventing a carry passing from the check sum to the rest of the store. Errors are detected by recalculating the check sum. Other features mentioned include subtraction, a keyboard, and ferrite cores.
