Abstract

936,331. Digital electric calculating. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Jan. 4, 1960, No. 268/60. Class 106 (1). An operation is divided into an instruction cycle, in which the computer controls are set up, and a variable number of execute cycles in which data specified by the instruction is operated on. Each execute cycle is divided into a read time in which a data character can be read from a store and a write time in which a data character can be written into a store. The invention provides means stated to be conventional in form whereby data read from a store location during a read time is written back in that location after processing during the write time of the succeeding execute cycle, reading from the succeeding store location having taken place during the intervening read time. The operands are taken from core memory 1.10 and storage 1.12. A location in memory 1.10 comprises five binary-coded decimal characters which are read out in parallel to buffer register 1.16. From the buffer register single characters are read out to CR-1, 1.18. A location in storage 1.12 comprises a single character which from buffer register 1.34 is read to CR-2, 1.36. The characters in CR-1, CR-2 are operated on in arithmetic unit 1.14 and the result placed in register 1.52, from which it may be returned either to memory or storage. Storage 1.12 is a five character register into which an operand is read preparatory to an arithmetic operation.
