Abstract
1,271,363. Dampers. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 1 Aug., 1969 [1 Aug., 1968], No. 36873/68. Heading F2S. [Also in Division F1] A turbine or compressor rotor blade 10 is provided with at least one sealed duct which is partially filled with a material such as sodium, potassium or a mixture thereof which is liquid at normal operating temperature of the blade, the duet being arranged so that the flow of liquid assists vibration damping of the blade. In one arrangement the sealed duct is a closed circuit formed by a groove 28 machined in one of the mating surfaces 24, 26 of the two parts 20, 22 of a shroud 18, the plane of the mating surfaces being inclined at a small angle to the plane perpendicular to the axis of the blade. When the latter is subject to its principal mode of vibration, i.e. circumferentially of the rotor, the liquid flows backwards and forwards through a restriction 32, dissipating energy and thus damping vibration. Several grooves 28 may be provided, each arranged to damp a different mode of vibration. In modifications, restriction 32 may be replaced by a sinuous portion, while the sealed duct need not form a closed circuit.
