Abstract
610,737. Gas-turbine blades. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and ALCOCK, J. F. March 19, 1946, No. 8520. [Class 110 (iii)] A gas turbine or like blade 1 is formed with a closed cavity 5 which continues into a radially inward extension 4 of the blade that projects into a region of lower temperature. The cavity is filled with a substance that will boil in the hot part of the blade and condense in the extension. The extension may be provided with cooling fins 8 or be shaped to act as an impeller on a cooling air stream. In place of one, there may be several parallel cavities. The extension may lie within the cooler hollow of a drum rotor 3, Fig. 1, or it may be the blade root, Fig. 7, which is cooled by surface air streams and one passing through the channel 11. Suitable substances mentioned are aluminium chloride or bromide, sodium and caesium. Specification 592,448 is referred to.
