Abstract

1,271,070. Thermal insulation. ACCESSAIR S.A. 22 Jan., 1969 [22 Jan., 1968], No. 32386/71. Divided out of 1,262,011. Heading F2X. [Also in Divisions F4 and H1] A thermally insulating structure, e.g. surrounding a hot heat storage core 5, comprises external and internal walls 1 and 2 defining therebetween a cavity 3 fitted with a porous material, and a getter substance 6 placed in the cavity 3 close to the " hot " wall 2. The cavity 3 is evacuated through a socket 4. The getter substance 6, which may comprise red phosphorous, barium, zirconium or titanium, on heating, serves to bind any residue gas present in the evacuated structure. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the getter substance (6) is arranged outside the insulating structure (26) and inside a tube (21) which communicates with the cavity of the structure. When necessary the getter substance can be activated by an electrical heating element (22) which in turn is energized automatically either when the gas pressure within the cavity exceeds a predetermined value or when the temperature of the " cold " wall (1) of the structure exceeds a predetermined value.
