Abstract
127,100. Livventaal, A. May 22, 1918. Rafts.-A raft-like structure built up of rough timber which it is desired to transport overseas comprises a backbcne of superposed square logs C' flanked on each side by diagonal bracing timbers E, and a bottom cross-frame of transverse logs secured to the backbone, to which cross-frame, side frames comprising planks N are secured and bent to ship-like form, as shown in Fig. 8. The logs are connected together by interposed fastenings A, Figs. B, 5, and 10, consisting of metal plates or strips A having one or more sharp projections or spikes B raised therefrom on opposite faces either at the edges or inside thereof. To stiffen the structure, chains Q are embedded in the bottom cross-frame in conjunction with side plates S, which also extend under the side frames N. Other tie-members, such as wire ropes R, are secured to the plates S and extend upwards round the structure to straining-means T at the top.
