BARGE.
spemqation ofmters meer. j ...Patented oct. 25, 1910.
Appiiozmn inea Maren 1e. 1907. .semaine 362,694.
lTo all 'whom 'it lmay concern: y f Be it known thatI, Riel-Ianni DoxovAN, l of Ambridge, Beaver county, lennsvlvania, have invented a new' andl'usel'ul `Barge, of l `which the following is a full, clear, and exaccompanying drawmgs, forming part of this Specification, in WhichuFigure 1 is a side elevation showing the end 'portion of a .wooden barge constructed partial ligitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a top plan View.'` I ,l My linvention relates to the class of wood in' barges, and is designed to provide at each end, these compartments being of sutiicient capacity to float the barge in ease of accident, and prevent. the sinking thereof.
In the draivings, 2, 2 represent the wooden side planking Vof the barge composed of planks, which are secured at their ,front ends to the vertically inclined interior timbers The front end portionsV of these planks are covered by the steel sheathing or side plating 4, and the planks and plating are secured by- .bolts 5 extending through the tinibers'-l and having countersnnk heads Within the side plating 4. The entire end portion of the barge is preferably made. of steel .plates forming the side plating and the rake platng,'tl1ese being joined at the corner by any suitable corner plates or corner pieces, the sheathing so formed being filled over the wooden body of the barge ut each end.
At. each end of the, barge within themetal sheathings. I provide an airtight compart-4 ment formed vby the steel rake bottom plating 8, the steel rake side plating 4, the steel end bulk-head 7, and the steelhandling deck 9, withv suitable interior bracingf. The
-by atransverse channel mem 'i'iialteithfm water-tight and they may be provided with an air-tight entrance hatch, it' desired. A
1.0 designates the bmn'pin block formed iierto which the rake plating is fastened, and suitably reinforced by gusset plates 1l.
'The advantages of my invention result from the providing of the wooden barge with steel ends; and particularly from the use of the end water-tight-compartments. By making these. compartments of sutlicient size, they will tloat. the barge so if itI is sunk it may be raised by merely removing the lading. On taking out. the lading the watertight compartments will cause the barge to floatto the surface.
Many changes may be made in the tormand ar angement of the training, the 'form and size of the water-tight compartments, &c., without departing from my invent-ion,
I claim y l. A Wooden barge having a. steel rake end, consisting ofside plating, bottom plating curved upwardly to form the rake, head or bumping block, a steel handling deelt, and
a steel water-tight bulk head; substantially as described.
2. A wooden barge having a steel rake end; consisting of side plating', bottom plat .ing curved in )wardlyto form the rake. head or bumping block, a steel handling deelt and 4'a .steel water-tight bulk head, said end conw taining a water-tight compartme `t to therelby give sufficient bnoyancy'to tioat the barge; substantially as described.l
ln testnnony whereof, l have hereunto set my hand.
y RICHARD J'. DONOVAN. Witnesses Gao. B. BLEMrNo,
Guo, U Pim-IELEE.
