Abstract

1,270,674. Centrifugal separator. FREIGHTLINER CORP. 22 April, 1969, No. 20583/69. Heading B2P. [Also in Division F1] A centrifugal separator for removing large particles of contaminants such as dust, dirt, water, moisture, snow and ice from the combustion air supply to an I.C. engine (see Division F1), comprises concentric outer and inner cylinders 31, 32 between which the contaminated air is delivered via an inlet 20. The air circulates around the space between the cylinders to centrifugally remove contaminants therefrom which subsequently pass through openings 53, 54 into pockets 33, 34. The contaminants are removed from the latter through pipes 38, 39 by suction created by the cooling fan of the I.C. engine. The clean air passes around the ends 41, 42 and into the interior of the cylinder 32 from where it is discharged through an outlet 43 to the conventional air cleaner, e.g. of the dry or oil-bath type, of the I.C. engine. Baffles 46, 47 assist in preventing contaminants from entering the cylinder 32. The cylinders 31, 32 are held in their spaced apart relationship by a portion of the outlet 43 and by a member 51, and may be of circular cross-section as shown, or ellipsoidal or even have planar faces.
