Abstract

1433596 Cooling IC engines MASSEY-FERGUSON SA 11 July 1973 [28 July 1972] 35307/72 Heading F1B [Also in Divisions B1-B2] An air cleaner for removing foreign matter from cooling air passed through the radiator 52 of a diesel engine 28 of a combined harvesting and threshing machine, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises an air duct 54, a fan mounted in or adjacent the duct and drivable, e.g. by the engine crank-shaft 58, to induce an air current through the duct and an outlet opening 74 formed in the side wall of the duct on the downstream side of the fan, the duct having a smoothly curved internal crosssectional shape between the fan and the outlet opening, whereby, in use, foreign matter drawn into the duct is removed from the air current and expelled through the outlet opening. The duct 54 is cylindrical and is connected at its air outlet end to the radiator and a frusto-conical or cylindrical open-ended collar 69 extends into the outlet end of the duct to define therewith an annular space 72 in which the outlet opening 74 opens. In operation, fan 56 draws air in through louvres 48 and blows it through the duct towards the radiator 52. Any foreign matter present in the air is flung outwards by centrifugal force under the action of the fan blades and moves along the inner surface of the duct in a helical path until it collects in the space 72 and is discharged therefrom through the outlet opening 74 and a tangential duct 80 connected thereto.
