Abstract
1425464 Centrifugal air cleaners MASSEYFERGUSON SERVICES NV 14 Feb 1973 [9 March 1972] 10998/72 Heading B2P [Also in Division F4] An air cleaner 10, Fig. 1, e.g. for removing foreign matter from the air passing through the radiator 12 of an i.e. engine of a combine harvester, comprises a duct 14 having a curved wall, a fan 16 to cause air flow through the duct, vanes 18 mounted in the duct to impart a helical motion to the air flowing through the duct, and an opening 22 in the wall of the duct downstream of the vanes to allow escape of centrifugally separated foreign matter from the duct. The vanes, in the form of flat plates inclined to the duct axis, are mounted in a cylindrical portion 20 of the duct between the wall thereof and a perforated metal hollow cylindrical screen 28 which is dosed at its end corresponding to the inlet end of the duct by an imperforate metal disc 30 and is open at its other end corresponding to the downstream end 25 of the frusto-conical portion 24 of the duct which is sealed to the radiator 12. The clean air passes through the perforations in the screen 28 and the core of the radiator to effect cooling of the water therein. The screen 28 may be provided with an imperforate annular band at the inlet end of the cleaner to reduce the chance of air passing through the screen before being acted upon by the vanes. In Fig. 7, the air cleaner 46 is sibown mounted on a combine harvester with its axis, at its inlet end, extending vertically. The fan 50 located in the duct is belt-driven from the combine's engine 54. The clean air passes directly out of the engine compartment 68 from the radiator 52 in a direction away from the operator of the combine. The foreign matter outlet opening is shown provided with a guiding chute 26. In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the air cleaner is mounted on the combine with its axis horizontal and the fan is driven directly by the engine. The engine compartment is pressurized by the air cleaner with clean air which also passes through apertures and enters the operator's cabin for controls.
