1,270,661. Fluorinated fire-fighting foams. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 April, 1969 [29 April, 1968; 7 May, 1968; 27 Sept., 1968; 25 Oct., 1968 (2)], Nos. 20214/ 68, 21613/68, 46013/68, 50786/68 and 50787/ 68. Heading A5A. A fire-fighting foam is produced by foaming an aqueous composition comprising a surfactant derived from a branched oligomer of tetrafluoroethylene (C 2 F 4 ) n where n #4. The composition may include a lesser amount of a foam-improver, e.g. a protein or cellulose derivative, polyalkylene oxide or a synthetic non-fluoro surfactant. Alternatively the composition may contain a non-oligomer-based fluorinated foaming agent, or the fluoro-oligomer may act as a foam-improver to a greater amount of another conventional foaming agent, e.g. a protein or cellulose derivative, soap, or a synthetic sulphate or sulphonate. Some examples of the fluoro-oligomer surfactant are (i) C 9 HF 16 SO 3 H (or Na or K); (ii) C 9 HF 16 SO 2 NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>; (iii) C 6 F 13 CH 2 COOH (or Na or K); (iv) C 6 F 13 CH 2 COQ where Q is a hydrophilic group containing N<SP>+</SP> or (CH 2 CH 2 O) 1-20; (v) C 2n F 4n-1 OC 6 H 4 -COR or -SO 2 R wherein n is 4, 5 or 6, and R is a hydrophilic group, e.g. the group O<SP>-</SP>M<SP>+</SP>, or a group containing N<SP>+</SP>; (vi) C 2n F 4n-1 OC 6 H 4 CH 2 N<SP>+</SP>(XYZ) Br- (or I-) where X, Y, Z are each ethyl or methyl; (vii) C 2n F 4n-1 R wherein n is 4, 5 or 6, and R is derived from a diamine or a glycol. The foams herein may also be used in conjunction with dry powder extinguishants, e.g. NaHCO 3 , KHCO 3 , KCI, K 2 SO 4 , ammonium phosphate, or the compositions of Specification 1,168,092.
